Lionhead babies are born looking like any other breed of bunny. As they near 5-10 days of age the Double Mane Gene Lionheads will develop their characteristic "mowhawk" of fur down their back and also appear bald on around their head. Note the photo below where the sides are completely bald of fur. This bald area is where the wool skirting will come in and is slower to develop than the normal fur over the saddle area. As they near 3-4 weeks of age they start to develop their "mane". Many will get the longer fur all over their bodies which will start to molt out around 6 weeks of age (some even later) leaving only a "skirt" of longer wool around their flanks and rump with normal fur over the saddle. Ideally they will have shed out this skirting by the time they reach 6 months of age, leaving only a shorter wool over the hips. This is called "Transistion wool" and cannot be more than 2" in length on the hips and no more than 1" on the face. The Double Mange gene kits tend to get their length of mane slower than the Single Mane kits. So the single mane kits tend to look the most promising at 5-7 weeks when weaning, but do not typically hold the length and density of mane desired as a senior animal. The Double Mane kits typically have a better density of mane, but some may not lose the wooly skirting as is called for by the Working Standard. By four to six months most of the body skirting should have molted out leaving just the mane around the neck. Some DMG's may even take several months longer to lose their skirting, so be patient...it's usually worth the wait.

- This is an example of a

- typically maintain too
- much face wool, body
- skirting, and ear
- furnishings to be
- shown as juniors,
- but some shed out
- and are showable
- as seniors.
- This is an example of a
- "Sport" or "Vienna
- Mismark" Lionhead.
- It is the result of the
- Vienna Gene. It is this
- gene that makes
- Blue-Eyed White rabbits.
- This is an example of a
- Double Mane Gene kit
- at about 1 week of age.
- Note the bald flanks
- contrasted by the
- mowhawk of fur over
- the saddle.
- Manes typically "bloom"
- slower on the DMG kits,
- but they also tend to carry
- more density and last longer.
